Natural Supplements for the Treatment of Acne

Treating acne with natural supplements can be an effective way to prevent new breakouts and limit the damage of acne. Some natural supplements can improve the appearance and texture of skin, allowing the skin’s natural rejuvenation process to occur while limiting clogged pores caused by oil and dead skin cells.

Many vitamins and minerals sold at holistic food stores and pharmacies are important components of skin health. Individuals with a healthy diet who exercise often obtain vitamins from foods and metabolic processes that occur in the body. However, some people have an imbalance in metabolism that cannot be correct with diet and exercise. Natural supplements in the form of capsules and essential oils can help these individuals replenish the body’s supply of ingredients that promote skin health and reduce acne.

Vitamin A supplements can help treat ongoing acne breakouts and is an important element in general skin health. Without appropriate amounts of vitamin A, the skin is unable to shed dead skin cells and produce the proper amount of sebum (skin’s natural oil). Glands in the skin that produce oils can become hyper active in the absence of Vitamin A, leading to more clogs and a greater chance for acne to develop. Individuals with a Vitamin A deficiency are subjected to many types of skin conditions, but acne is among the most common symptoms of the condition. Therefore, it is possible to treat acne caused by this deficiency by taking a natural Vitamin A supplement.

Another natural supplement that may be very beneficial for those who suffer from acne is Vitamin C. Vitamin C is known best for its ability to effectively boost immune system response. Because of this effect, Vitamin C may also help the immune system to battle the bacterial infections that are common with cystic types of acne (infected pores). When bacteria accumulate in the skin’s pores, the immune system responds. Vitamin C may make this process occur sooner, thereby limiting the amount of bacteria present in the pore and the size or severity of the acne.

Vitamin E is also essential to skin health. While it will not treat the causes of acne directly, it is a natural supplement that can aid in healing following an acne breakout. Because acne develops deep within the pore, scarring is a much more common occurrence in individuals with cystic types of acne. Vitamin E assists in the healing process by helping the skin to produce collagen, a type of tissue that is just like normal skin tissue. When the body produces too little collagen however, a pit may be left behind in the wake of severe acne. More collagen may be produced to evenly fill pits caused by acne scarring.

Natural supplements that treat acne include those that are produced from plant oils. Many plants contain antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that limit bacteria count and swelling associated with common acne. These plants include lavender, tea tree oil, and witch hazel. Jojoba oil and argan oil may also be beneficial if applied directly to the skin because they can regulate excess sebum production.
