Mederma for Acne Scars

Does Mederma Get Rid of Acne Scars?

Mederma® is a topical skin care product that many believe can help get rid of acne scars over time. The effectiveness of any topical cream or gel can depend greatly on the type of scar that is present, the person’s skin type, and the age of the scar. In general, people with newer scars claim that Mederma® helped to get rid of their acne scars within a few months of use. Others say that it only diminished the appearance of the scars within that time frame, but after a year or more of use the scars are much less noticeable.

Acne scars form when collagen is produced to fill in areas of damaged tissue on the skin. Since collagen fibers in scar tissues connect to each other differently than normal skin tissue, the scar is a noticeable spot on the skin. With consistent use, creams or gels such as those sold under the brand name Mederma® can be effective ways of diminishing the appearance of this tissue in relation to the surrounding normal tissue.

How Mederma® Helps to Ger Rid of Acne Scars

The primary active ingredient in Mederma® is something found in most household kitchens: the onion. Along with other extracts (together known as Cepalin®), Mederma® helps get rid of acne scars by softening the scar tissue. It also changes the texture of the scar tissue and smoothes it out, so that it is a closer match to the surrounding skin.

To use Mederma® to get rid of acne scars, individuals are generally advised to massage the cream into the scar at least three to four times daily. This can be somewhat of an inconvenience to many people. It may also take many months (or many years) of use to see drastic changes in the appearance of scars using the product. People who use Mederma® early in the scar’s life, immediately after the wound has healed, report far better results than those who begin using the cream to get rid of acne scars that developed long ago.

The side effects of Mederma® are mild, if present at all. Some people report minor skin irritation and those who use the gel version find that peeling is a nuisance. For people who have an acne condition: Mederma® can cause breakouts in people with sensitive skin, so it may not be advisable for all consumers. It is also recommended that Mederma® only be used when wounds have completely healed, so it cannot be used on skin areas with open comedones and cystic acne where infection may be present.

Although no product can really get rid of scars, Mederma® is thought to be a superior product to many other topical creams available. While there is no hard evidence that it works better than many other products containing the same active ingredients, doctors recommend Merderma® to help get rid of all types of scars; including those caused by surgery, sun damage, injury, stretch marks, and acne.
