Injections for Acne Scars

Injections that Get Rid of Acne Scars

In cases of severe acne scarring, dermatologists and doctors may recommend an injection that can help get rid of acne scars. Injections that get rid of scars are also known as “dermal fillers” or “acne scar fillers”, if used for this specific purpose.

Many acne scars appear to be sunken beneath the top layer of the skin. The most common type of acne scars, ice pick scars, is the result of damage that has occurred deep within the pores. Where collagen and healing tissues form deep within the pore, the upper layers of scar tissue get tugged down. When the wound is completely healed, this results in a pock mark, or depression in the skin’s appearance.

Dermal fillers work to get rid of the appearance of acne scars by raising the scar tissue to a level that is even with the surrounding skin. In most procedures, doctors will first perform a subcision to allow room for the filler. During this procedure, a thin specialize needle is inserted into the scar at an angle.

This creates a void beneath the surface and cuts the upper scar tissue away from the deeper pore tissue that is pulling it inward. Following a subcision procedure, the doctor can inject a dermal filler or synthetic fats to raise the upper scar tissue. Once the scar tissue is even with the surrounding skin, it can then be lightened and softened to further help to get rid of the acne scar’s appearance on the skin.

Types of Injections that Help to Get Rid of Acne Scars

There are at least three major types of acne scar injections that can work as dermal fillers. These are collagen fillers, fat tissue fillers, and acne silicone fillers.

Collagen fillers are the most commonly used injections to get rid of acne scars. These types of injections work by inserting collagen into the void created during subcision, a substance that would naturally fill the void over time anyway. The brands most often used by doctors are Zyplast®, Cosmoplast®, Zyderm®, and Cosmoderm®.

Fat tissue may also be used to get rid of acne scars or improve the overall appearance of the skin. While there are synthetic fats available, many doctors prefer to use the patient’s own fat for this procedure. Fat is extracted through a needle from a different part of the body and then injected into the void caused by the subcision.

Finally, there are new agents being created for injection into scar tissues. Some doctors are trying out new methods to get rid of acne scars with dermal fillers such as Juvaderm® and Restylane®, which are silicone-based fillers. Other doctors may recommend lactic acid and several other simple substances to fill the void.

All fillers work in the same manner, but not all of them are suitable for all individuals. (Other health complications must be considered before use.) Therefore, dermatologists usually perform an allergy test before treatment to be sure that the person will not experience an adverse reaction.
