Using Lemon Juice to Get Rid of Acne Scars

Lemon juice is a natural remedy for many ailments and is commonly used in skin care regimens. To get rid of acne scars, lemon juice works best on minor scarring and is especially useful when skin discoloration is present because of old acne scars. It can be mixed with a number of other natural agents to maximize the effects of the lemon’s pH properties. It should be noted, however, that lemon juice is also a natural skin lightener. It can cause normal skin to become lighter as well, so apply with care.

It is possible to have an allergic reaction (also known as contact dermatitis) to any substance placed on the skin, especially in the concentrations used to help get rid of acne scars. Testing the effects of lemon juice on a small, inconspicuous area of the skin is recommended for people who have never used lemon juice in the past. Since contact dermatitis can lead to acne and further scarring, lemon juice needs to be tested on an area of the skin that is similar to the skin to be treated, but which is hidden in a place where it can be concealed if necessary.

How to Use Lemon Juice to Get Rid of Acne Scars


Lemon juice can be used by itself or as part of an herbal solution to help get rid of minor acne scars and skin discoloration. When used alone, a small amount of lemon juice can be used to saturate a cotton ball or cosmetic pad. The saturated applicator can then be used to liberally apply the lemon juice to areas of the skin that are affected by discoloration or acne scars. Rinse the skin after several minutes.

Lemon juice may be mixed with cucumber juice and rose water (equal parts of all) as an herbal solution to help get rid of acne scars. The solution can be applied similarly to lemon juice alone, by using a saturated cotton ball or cosmetic applicator. This solution can be left on the skin for 45 minutes before rinsing it off under cool water.

Egg whites can be combined with lemon juice to create an overnight masks that will help to get rid of acne scars and discoloration, as well as keep the skin clear of toxins and agents that can cause acne in the future. Combine equal parts of egg whites and lemon juice in a bowl and beat with a whisk or blender until the mixture resembles a light pudding (medium thickness). Apply the mixture to the skin and let it rest overnight. Rinse in the morning.

Five drops of lemon juice concentrate when mixed with 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 teaspoon of basil or mint can be applied to the skin for twenty minutes to help reduce acne scars and discoloration. Some experts recommend using one of these solutions on a regular basis to not only get rid of acne scars, but prevent new breakouts from forming.
