How to Heal Acne Scars

Heal Acne Scars With These Skin Rejuvenation Techniques

Acne scars are the result of the body’s healing process, so in this sense they are already healed. However, you can help the body further heal the acne wound by making it easier for the collagen and skin that makes up the acne scar to take on the appearance of normal healthy skin.

Normal skin is “put together” by millions of interconnected fibers known as collagen proteins. In normal skin development (such as renewal), these fibers are criss-crossed and woven together much like a basket is woven from a material. Scar tissue, while also made up of collagen proteins, do not connect in the same manner.

Instead, collagen fibers that make up scars generally connect in long strings. To the naked eye, these fibers are obviously different than the surrounding healthy skin fibers. We call this a scar, even though it is technically normal skin fibers and tissues.

The problems with acne scars can be myriad. In addition to being embarrassing, some scar tissues can restrict movement and cause pain. For someone with severe cystic acne on the back, constrictive scar tissues can make it painful to move their arms or twist at the torso because the skin stretching pulls on the scars.

Healing Acne Scars

Healing acne scars is possible with some creams and other remedies available without a prescription. A popular acne scar healing cream is Mederma®, which is reasonably priced and often recommended by doctors following surgery and severe acne. There are many other creams that accomplish the same, but they all work by softening the scar tissue so that it is more pliable and better blends in with the surrounding skin.

When it comes to healing acne scars with creams, sooner (but not too soon) is better. Once an acne wound has healed and is no longer infected, beginning the use of an acne scar healing cream as soon as possible increases the chances that the scar will be less noticeable. Likewise, using a cream like Mederma® on an old scar offers less chance of further healing (though it is possible).

An important consideration when trying to heal an acne scar is that it will take time. Mederma®, for example, must be used three to four times daily for a period of months before one should expect any improvement. If the acne scar is old, it can take even longer to heal. Even so, improving scar appearance is the best possible result. Only surgical removal can completely get rid of acne scars.

Many home remedies for acne scar healing are available as well, but should be tested first to ensure there will be no allergic reaction. The most common at-home remedies for acne scars call for honey or lemon juice, because both work to cleanse and tone the skin. (Lemon juice can also lighten the skin and make the scar less obvious.) You will find a number of kitchen items may work on scars, including cucumbers, potatoes, strawberries, egg whites, and even yogurt.
